  • Arc de Triomphe

Place Charles de Gaulle, 75008 Paris

Commissioned by Napoleon in 1806, and is one of Paris's most famous landmarks. Climb to the top to obtain some of the best views of Paris. Visit the tomb of the 'Unknown Soldier', which has come to represent a major part of France's military history.

  • La Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

The first stone was laid in 1163, and a cathedral has stood on the site ever since. The setting of Victor Hugo's famous romantic novel, 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame.'

  • Musée du Louvre

Musee du Louvre, 75058 Paris

Contains over 35,000 works of art including the Mona Lisa, the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci. Home to the Pyramid, which is a modern contrast to the traditional setting of the Louvre. Has many feature exhibitions, and provides thematic trails to ensure you get to see everything you want to.

  • La Basilique du Sacré Coeur de Montmartre

The second highest point in Paris, being built on the hill of Montmartre (Mount of Martyrs). Visitors can climb up to the Dome, and see all across Paris. The Basilica has an exciting history, even though it was only completed in 1914. Before that Montmartre was visited by many saints, including Joan of Arc.

  • Musée d'Orsay

The Museum is set in the former train station Gare d'Orsay, which was also the setting for Orson Welles' adaptation of Kafka's 'The Trial'. Contains examples of the works of Degas, Cabanel, Van Gogh, and Monet, among many other distinguished artists from the years 1848-1914.

Place de la Concorde and Le Champs-Elysées

The Place de la Concorde has a long and colourful history, and is known for being the place where Marie-Antoinette and Louis XVI were guillotined. It is home to the Obelisk of Luxor, which was donated by the Viceroy of Egypt. It is also the starting point for the Champs-Elysées. The Champs-Elysées is one of Paris's most famous thoroughfares, and runs from the Place de la Concorde to the Arc de Triomphe. It contains many shops and businesses, and also hosts many national events including the Bastille Day parade.

  • Musée National Picasso

5 rue de Thorigny, 75003 Paris

This museum contains thousands of Picasso's works, which were claimed by the French state in 1973 in lieu of inheritance taxes. The collection is the most complete collection of Picasso's work in the world. The museum also contains examples of the works of Cézanne and Matisse.

  • Centre Pompidou

Centre Pompidou, 75004 Paris

The centre is the epitome of 20th Century style with its 'inside out' architecture.
i.e. it was built with its escalators on the outside to maximise space, as well as the water pipes, electricity cables, and air ducts. The fourth and fifth floors are the National Museum of Modern Art, which contains examples of Matisse and Warhol, among others. The first three floors are home to the public library.

Centre open 11:00-22:00.

When it comes to elevated dining, this exclusive restaurant takes it to a new level. Located on top of the Théâtre des Champs Elysées, the restaurant has a modern interior.   • Le Vieux Bistro

14 rue du CloÎtre-Notre-Dame, 75004 Paris

Although located by a major tourist hotspot, this traditional French bistro serves classic dishes that are enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. A meal will cost around 20.00€. Open from 12:00 until 00:00 (except Thursdays when it opens from 18:00), closed on Wednesday.

  • Au Pied de Cochon

6 rue Coquillière, 75001 Paris

Established since 1946, this bistro has been a constant attraction to both locals and tourists alike. Serves what its name implies; pig's trotters in béarnaise sauce, although the menu is much more extensive for those not wishing to partake. The à la carte menu costs 43.00€. Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  • L'As du Fallafel

If you want a quick snack or food to go, but don't fancy a sandwich, then a falafel is a good alternative. The falafels range in price but around 5.00€ is a good guide. Open all day Sunday to Friday.

  • Piccolo Teatro

This vegetarian restaurant serves a wide variety of dishes, from soups to gratins, and even organic wine to accompany your meal. A meal can be had for around 25.00€ per person, with lunch being significantly cheaper. Serves lunch and dinner, closed on Monday.

  • Le Hangar

Popular French restaurant in the shadow of the Pompidou Centre. Reasonably priced food, costing around 15.00€ for a meal. Restaurant accepts payment by cash only. Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, but is closed on Sunday and Monday.

Somewhat of a French institution among Parisians, this café has been the local of Jean Paul Sartre and André Breton. Range of light snacks and drinks available, with a Croque-Monsieur costing around 7.00€.

A range of different shows are available, but all reflect the flamboyance which goes hand in hand with the Parisian cabaret show. The format is again show only (from 70.00€), or show and dinner (from 120.00€).

  • Crazy Horse

Famous for its unique show, 'The Art of The Nude.' Shows are held throughout the evening up until the early hours, and prices vary from 49.00€ in the bar (entry to show subject to availability), or dinner and show packages from 115.00€.

Occasional performances by the Orchestre National de France as well as many classical music events, opera, and ballet.

As well as a wide range of theatrical venues, there are also many small cinemas showing cutting edge films and drama, which are very rarely seen outside Paris. Many of these are in French or have French subtitles.

There are also a great many festivals which take place across the city.
